Punto Banco is a variant of Baccarat, one of the most popular casino games. This is a game of odds between the banker and the player. In this game, there are fixed rules and cards are dealt according to them. The main objective of the game is to bet on whose hand, the player or the banker, will be closest to the number 9.
Casino Games Online › Card Games › Baccarat › Punto Banco (Nevada Baccarat) Rules
Punto Banco aka North American or Nevada Baccarat is a casino card game. Unlike Baccarat Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque, the rules are fixed and the result of the game depends strictly on chance. Punto Banco is played at an oval table with 12 seats. The participants of the game may bet on the Player or the Banker.
If Punto Banco is a new game to you, we recommend going through general baccarat rules, which are common for all three variations of this game. Apart from Punto Banco (Nevada Baccarat) those are Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque as mentioned in the preface.
Nevada Baccarat Playing Table and Start of the Game
Punto Banco (Nevada Baccarat) is traditionally played at an oval table, which is served by three persons – a croupier who controls the course of the game and two dealers who collect and pay out the bets, accept commissions and watch over the bets.
Punto Banco is usually played with six or eight card decks, which are shuffled by the croupier or the dealers only. The cards are dealt using a special device called a card shoe, when only one card can be drawn to prevent potential cheats. The card shoe rotates around the table from one player to another. Its movement resembles a motion of a train on a railway (hence the name Chemin de Fer).
The player with the card shoe deals the cards as a banker. However the role of the banker is merely formal, as the player does not cover the bets (this is done by the casino), actually he or she can bet on the Player too. The players are not required to act as a banker, they can pass the card shoe to the next player – the role of the banker is purely ceremonial.
The participant of the game who bets the highest amount on the Player is dealt the cards and honored to show them and announce the total of the cards. The croupier instructs the banker, whether to draw a third card and then announces the result, e.g. 'Banker wins 6 to 4'.
The Player's and the Banker's Rule in Punto Banco
First of all two cards are dealt face down for both the Player and the Banker: one card to the Player, then one card to the Banker and then again the second card to the Player and the Banker. After that the cards are shown and the croupier announces the totals (e.g. Player 5, Banker 4). Then according to the rules of the table (Tableau) the croupier determines, whether it is necessary to draw a third card.
According to the first two cards it is decided, whether – both the Player and the Banker – must draw a third card or must stand. The word 'must' is used because the rules of Punto Banco are fixed and cannot be deviated from (see the rules below). The third card is dealt face up. The victory of the Player or the Banker is as always determined by the higher final total of the card values.
If the Player or the Banker (or they both simultaneously) reach the total 8 or 9 out of the first two cards also known as the Natural, then additional cards are not drawn and the result is evaluated immediately. Of course, the winning side is the one with the higher total. If the Natural is not reached by the Player or the Banker, then there are the following rules.
The Player's Rule
The Player draws the third card, if his total is 0–5 and stands if the total is 6 or 7.
The Banker's Rule
If the Player stands, the Banker proceeds according to the same rule as the Player, that is he or she draws the third card with the total 0–5 and stands at 6 or 7.
If the Player draws the third card, the Banker proceeds according to these more complex rules:
- If the Player draws 2 or 3, the Banker draws if his total is 0–4 and stands at 5–7,
- If the Player draws 4 or 5, the Banker draws if he has 0–5 and stands at 6–7,
- If the Player draws 6 or 7, the Banker draw if he has 0–6 and stands at 7,
- If the Player draws 8, the Banker draws at 0–2 and stands at 3–7,
- If the Player draws an Ace, 9, 10 or a figure, the Banker draws at 0–3 and stands at 4–7.
The Result of the Game in Punto Banco
Punto Banco Rules 2019
The croupier announces the winner, e.g. 'Player wins 6 to 4'. Firstly the lost bets are collected and then, according to the rules of a casino, the winning bets are paid out. The payout for both bets (Player/Banker) is even, i.e. 1:1, and the casino charges a 5% commission (commission baccarat).
Some casinos use the same payment method with one exception: they pay back 50% of the bet if the Banker wins with the total 6 also known as Super 6. In this case the house edge is only 1.46% for the bets on the Banker and the commission baccarat on the bets on the Player or a tie.
If the totals of the Player's and Banker's cards are equal, the croupier announces a tie (Egalité). The bets made directly on the tie are paid out in the ratio 9:1 or 8:1. However this way of betting cannot be recommended as it brings as high as 14% profit (edge) to the casino. When the tie occurs the bets on the Player and the Banker remain on the table and the result will be determined by the next round(s). Some casinos allow taking these bets back.
Punto Banco is a simple card game. It is derived from the famous card game baccarat, which is also called 'the rich man's card game', and is James Bond’s favorite game.
There are two possible antagonists in this casino game. One of them is Punto hand (Punto – punter, player) and the other is the Banco hand (Banco – banker). Players can make a bet on any of them and in each hand, after short play, the winner is proclaimed. Our casino has introduced a new feature in this casino game that makes the game more dynamic: we allow playing on several boxes at once. Within each hand, the Punto and Banco can play several times.
BetVoyager features a conventional version of Punto Banco and a version with no house edge.
Basic Rules of Punto Banco

Punto Banco uses eight 52-card decks. Suits have no meaning. All face cards and 10s are worth 0 points, Aces are worth 1 point, and the remaining cards are assigned their face-value (for example, an Eight is worth 8 points and a Deuce is worth 2 points). After adding the total value of a hand, only the last digit is counted. For example, three 7s are equal to 1 point (not 21). The maximum possible sum is 9 and the minimum is 0.Before the deal the player makes a bet on at least one box in Punto Banco. He can bet on Punto, Banco or on a tie (Egalite). The player can combine these bets as he likes, meaning he can make two or even three bets on each box. These bets can be of different sizes.
Since all bets are placed, a successive play on boxes begins. Both the Punto and the Banco are dealt two cards face-up. In some cases, the third card can be added to any pair of cards, and as a result each side can have either two or three cards (see paragraphs 5–7 for further details). The side with the largest sum of points wins.
If the bet on Punto wins, it is paid 1:1 and the player loses the remaining bets on the box. If the bet on Banco wins, there is a slight difference and the bet is paid 95:100. In other words, the casino keeps 5 percent of the win. When the game ends in a tie, the bet on a tie is paid 9:1. Whenever there is a tie, any bets on Punto and Banco are considered unplayed and they are returned to the player.
Our No House Edge version features the following payouts. If the bet on Punto wins, the player gets additional 2.76% of the win. In other words, this bet is paid 1.0276:1. Superman casino game. If the bet on Banco wins, the casino keeps not 5% of the win, but only 2.7%. When the game ends in a tie, the bet on a tie is paid 9.5:1.
The payouts on all bets for Punto Banco are rounded down to the nearest cent.
If either Punto or Banco was dealt 8 or 9 points, the game on that box is over. The Punto’s and Banco’s points are compared, and result is determined on the box.
If the Punto hand has 6 or 7 points, further actions depend on how many points the Banco has. If he has 6 or 7 points, the game is stopped, and result is determined. If the Banco has less than 6 points, he is dealt the third card, after which the game on that box is concluded.
If the Punto has less than 6 points, he is dealt a third card. Now the Banco can also take a third card if necessary, after which the game on that box is concluded. Two factors influence whether the Banco will receive a third card: the sum of his two original cards and the final card dealt to the Punto. This relationship is shown in the following table ('+' marks the cases when the Banco is dealt the third card):
Banco's Points | Punto's Third Card | |||||||||
